Serbian 201, Exercise 7 — what's in the fridge and what isn't. Two things at once: the verb, and what it does to the food after it.
Serbian doesn't say "ne imam". The negative of imati is a single fused word: nemam, nemaš, nema, nemamo, nemate, nemaju. It's one of a small handful of verbs that behave this way — like neću and nisam.
The second thing is quieter but it's everywhere. Whatever you have or don't have is a direct object, so it lands in the accusative. For most food that changes nothing you can see — imam hamburger, nemam vino, imam mleko all look like the dictionary form. But feminine nouns ending in -a swap it for -u:
kafa → Imam kafu. · voda → Nemam vodu.
supa → Nemam supu. · pica → Imam picu. · banana → Nemam bananu.
+ means you have it, − means you don't.
