Almost every abstract word in this set is built the same way: take a verb, add -nje, and you get a neuter noun naming the action itself. Once you see the pattern you stop memorising these one by one.
| Verb | Noun | English |
|---|---|---|
| zagaditi | zagađenje | pollution |
| krčiti | krčenje | clearing, felling |
| zagrevati | zagrevanje | warming |
Notice the consonant shift in the first one: zagadi- becomes zagađ-. That softening (d → đ, t → ć, s → š) happens all through this pattern, and it's why the noun never looks quite like the verb you started from.
Krčenje šuma shows a second habit worth naming. A verbal noun keeps its object, but in the genitive: not "krčenje šume" as one forest, but šuma — the genitive plural, forests in general. Same shape as energija vetra, the power of wind.
And the adjectives here agree in gender and number, which is easy to miss when everything is plural: naftne mrlje (f.), izduvni gasovi (m.), klimatske promene (f.), prirodne katastrofe (f.). One noun in the set has no adjective at all and is neuter plural on its own: klizišta.
