The verb TO BE, singular — three tiny words that let you say almost anything about yourself, another person, or a thing right in front of you.
Serbian doesn't have a separate word for "am," "are," and "is" the way English does — it has one verb, biti, that changes shape depending on who's doing the being. In the singular, that gives you exactly three forms to learn, and you'll use all three in your very first conversation:
SAM — when you're talking about yourself: Ja sam Marina. (I am Marina.)
SI — when you're talking to someone: Ti si u Kanadi. (You are in Canada.)
JE — for everyone and everything else: Moj brat je mlad. (My brother is young.)
One trap worth knowing early: Serbian doesn't use "to be" for age the way English does. You don't say "I am 8" — you say Imam 8 godina, literally "I have 8 years," using the verb imati (to have) instead. Keep that one in your back pocket; it trips up almost everyone at first.
